This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) – Eastern Suburbs Branch, published their first-ever Anthology (a collection of stories, poetry and plays). I was very honoured to have my poetry selected as part of the publication, together with over 70 of some of the most well-loved Australian children’s literature creatives!
The CBCA is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. Since 1945 the CBCA has hosted a national, annual book week. This year’s book week was from the 21st of August until the 27th and its theme this year was “Old worlds, new worlds, other worlds”.
Below is a beautiful review I have received inspired by my poem entitled The World of Rhyme. Thank you to the very talented Elizabeth Mary Cummings (President of the CBCA Eastern Suburbs Branch) for sharing your lovely words!
“It is no surprise to discover that Sonia’s aptitude for rhyme has its roots in a lifetime of musical appreciation and a career in speech pathology. Sonia is known for turning up to writing events flourishing her violin and her rhyming picture books published by Big Sky Publishing have been shortlisted for the Speech Pathology awards over the years. Sonia’s writing combines an insight into daily family life and children’s points of view as well as representing the deep connections families have.
Sonia’s contribution to the anthology, a rhyming poem about a Mum driving their child wild with an outpouring of rhymes, is a good example of this, for although the poem’s narrator finds Mum’s rhyming ways cause to eye-roll, they discover themselves falling under the poetic spell too with a final invitation to all to come ‘join in’ the world of rhyme forever.
