What If We’ve Got Humility All Wrong, and Our Kids Are Paying the Price?

I don’t know about you, but for a very long time, I have misunderstood the true meaning of humility… and I’m not the only one. Since childhood, many of us have been told that humility means stepping back, staying small, and avoiding the spotlight. “Don’t boast,” “Don’t show off,” “Be humble.” These messages, often well-intentioned, have shaped generations into believing that humility is the act of dimming one’s light… AKA shying away from your own light and gifts.

But what if we’ve misunderstood humility altogether?

What if true humility isn’t about making ourselves smaller—but rather about embracing and expressing our gifts fully, while recognizing the brilliance in others too?

This changes everything… because now, it is no longer about shying, but rather… SHINING.

So how does this affect our children?

Children come into this world with a natural desire to explore, express, and share their unique gifts. I receive social media ‘memories’ of when my children were young; and am reminded of the purity in their freedom to create a drawing, tell a story, or dance freely—they do so with radiant joy, unburdened by self-doubt. Yet, somewhere along the way, they absorb the message that standing out too much, being too confident, or owning their strengths might be seen as arrogant or egotistic.

The inherent human need to fit in and belong is real; but the fear of being “too much” causes many children to retreat, to second-guess themselves, and to seek external validation rather than trusting in their innate worth. You can still be your unique self, and fit in. In classrooms, on playgrounds, and even at home, children begin to equate humility with hiding rather than honouring who they truly are.

This myth does more than just suppress confidence—it dims the collective brilliance of the world. When children (and adults) suppress their gifts, we all miss out on the unique beauty and contributions they have to offer.

It is time to reframe and reclaim humility… as a CALL TO SHINE.

True humility is not about shrinking. It’s about recognising the magnificence within ourselves while honouring the magnificence in others. It’s about stepping into our gifts fully and encouraging others to do the same.

Here are three ways we can realign with true humility and help the next generation do the same:

1️⃣ Celebrate Strengths (Without Comparison)

Encourage children (and ourselves) to acknowledge their gifts without fear of judgment. Instead of discouraging a child from expressing pride in their abilities, guide them toward gratitude and purpose: “Your storytelling is amazing—how can we share it with others?” This shifts the focus from ego to contribution.

2️⃣ Embody Humility

Children learn best by observing. When they see us confidently sharing our skills and passions without diminishing others, they understand that their own gifts are meant to be shared too. Speak positively about your own strengths and passions. Let them witness you owning your abilities while also uplifting those around you.

3️⃣ Encourage Self-Expression Without Shame

Allow children to express their talents, thoughts, and ideas freely. If a child feels hesitant to speak up or showcase their skills, remind them: “The world needs your voice. Your ideas matter.” The more we nurture their authentic expression, the more we contribute to a world where humility is about shining together, rather than shrinking alone.

Authentic humility is a form of flourishing

When we embrace the real meaning of humility, we empower children (and ourselves) to step forward, contribute, and inspire. A world where people stand confidently in their gifts—while recognising and uplifting others—is a world where creativity, collaboration, and infinite possibility flourish.

So let’s shift the narrative.

Let’s empower children (and remind ourselves) that humility isn’t about playing small—it’s about shining in a way that helps others shine too.

May we all flourish (and shine) together.
